Uses of Wooden Alphabet Letters

June 1st, 2010

Wooden alphabet letters are usually bought by parents to spell out their children’s names. These letters are placed either on the door of the kids room, above the child’s bed or anywhere in the house to make a child feel special. They are absolutely adorable and make the best personalized gifts for children especially with fancy wooden letters such as animal letters, dinosaur letters, dolphin letters, fairy letters etc.

However, spelling out a child’s name is not the only use of wooden alphabet letters. As a matter of fact, these pieces of wooden art can be used in several different ways, all of which are equally important.

Perhaps what most people would consider as the most significant use of these wooden letters is as educational toys. Many schools from around the world have in fact ensured that children learn the alphabet and also word making skills via fancy wooden letters. Researchers who study a child’s development over a period of time have all concluded that if learning is made as much fun as possible for the child, then they are more than likely to pick up things faster and also show greater enthusiasm for learning.

This is where getting letters with dolphins or various animals on them would not only make it more fun for the child, but they will actually look forward to the learning sessions. Also for those kids who have a learning disability, fancy wooden alphabet letters have come as a godsend for them. Several teachers note that their class has better attention when using a prop or something entertaining. Wooden letters with animals, dolphins, fairies etc on them do exactly that – capture a child’s attention. The uses of these letters in education are immense and it is simply up to your imagination on how you use them to benefit a child.

The other important use of wooden letters is what we briefly touched upon at the beginning of this article – personalized gifts. Alphabet letters with all kinds of art on them make the best personalized gift that you can give to any child. It shows you really care about the little one by getting them something that so clearly spell out their name. You can even get smaller sized wooden letters to put on toy boxes or any other gift that you bought for the child.

A personalized gift makes it completely stand out from other gifts that a child may receive on any special occasion. It is the best way to show you care and make the child feel really excited. I haven’t met a child yet who was not excited to see their name on something, especially a gift meant for them.

Of course wooden alphabet letters need not be just for little kids. It can be used for grown ups as well. For example, they can be used to spell out your company name or shop name outside the place of business. They could be used to write a special message for your loved one. Similar to uses in education, wooden letters can be used by grown ups in an infinite number of ways. It is simply up to your own imagination on how you want to use these amazing letters.

Wooden Letters for Children’s Names

May 25th, 2010

One of the most unique and personalized gifts you can give to any child is a set of wooden letters which spell out their name. These letters can be placed on a wall inside the children’s room, on the door of the room or even anywhere in house where it is clearly visible. In fact parents often surprise their children by ordering fancy wooden alphabet letters which spell out not just their names but other things as well such as “Congratulations”, “Welcome Home” etc.

Since wooden letters have been high on demand lately, toy companies are constantly coming out with fancier letters each day such as getting different characters, animals or cartoons painted on each letter. I personally find the dolphin letters extremely cute. Dolphins can be used for both boys as well as girls. As a matter of fact, many studies have shown that kids are quite fascinated by dolphins and are curious about them. They also would love to interact with dolphins in ocean parks or other places. Dolphins are also known for their intelligence. Many consider Dolphins second only to humans when it comes to using their brains. Hence some parents find it symbolic to order wooden letters with dolphins on them to subconsciously make their children be interested in more intellectual subjects. Of course as I already mentioned, Dolphins being extremely cute, they add to the room’s overall charm as well.

When it comes to girls, the most popular form of wooden alphabet letters is having fairies. Most wooden toy companies say that most of the orders for girl names as usually for fairy wooden letters. Fairies add a pleasantly girlish feel to any room and little girls absolutely love them. Of course it is not just the little girls but most teenagers would love fairies as well. Having fairy wooden letters would go well with other furnishings in the room especially if the walls are painted in pink or any other related shade. The best part is each letter can contain a different type of fairy – from garden fairies to flower fairies – most girls would absolutely fall in love with these fairy wooden letters the moment they see them.

Of course some parents want something absolutely unique for their children. While they want wooden alphabet letters, they do not want something that is considered as common or easily available. It comes from the fact that all parents feel their child is unique and one of a kind. Hence they want things that are unique for their children. Such parents can opt for Koala alphabet letters. The Koala bear is native to the country of Australia and is considered as one of the cutest animals you can ever come across. They are absolutely gentle and lovable animals. Many parents feel instead of going for the usual, they want their wooden alphabet letters to contain Koala bears all around them. Also Koala alphabet letters are sure to get you a wide range of compliments from whoever views them in your house.

Whatever may be your choice for the design, there is no doubt that wooden alphabet letters make a great gift and something that is quite unique. Most children absolutely love receiving these wooden letters especially if they spell out their name.

Fascinating trends in Children’s names

May 18th, 2010

It is quite fascinating as well as interesting to note the trends in children’s names over the past two decades. For me, from the moment you find out that you are going to have a child, searching for a good name is one of the most exciting and challenging tasks at hand. Some parents-to-be have their favorite names already in mind even before a child is conceived. For others, they research on the best names, take suggestions from family and friends or even look at foreign cultures to find the perfect name.

Nowadays, the internet has become the favorite tool for parents to research on good names. If you take a look at the website of the American Social Security Administration, you will find the most popular names by year listed on the site. While going through the data on children’s names, I found some really fascinating facts.

For starters, the name Jacob was the most popular choice for a boy’s name in the year 2009. But what caught my attention was the same name was most popular from 1999 till date. Before researching on the most popular names for the past decade, I would never have imagined the name Jacob would top the list 10 years in a row. Of course what is even more fascinating is the fact that the same name does not even feature in the top 20 most popular names in the year 1989. This means the name Jacob has got really popular in the past decade, popular enough to top the charts year after year.

The other interesting trend, but not one that surprised me a lot, was that the name that consistently featured in the top 3 most popular boy names was Michael. To be honest, I had imagined Michael would be the most popular name year after year but looking at the data, I realized although it is a popular name, it is not the number one name today. But like I said, it is the name that is consistently appearing in the top 3 not just for the past decade but for the past 20 years as well.

Of course I must mention here, studying the trends of popular boy names is not as interesting as studying the trends in girl names. For boys, I noticed almost the same names kept appearing on the top 20 year after year. When it came to girl’s names though, it was a whole new ball game. There were so many interesting names appearing and the popularity changed each year. For example, in 2009 Isabella was the most popular name for a girl. However, in 2008 Emma was the most popular name and in 2007, Emily came on top.

Also the variety in girl’s names in the top 20 for the past two decades was far greater than in the boy’s list. For those parents who are still looking out for a good name for their yet to be born child, I do suggest researching on the most popular names. It will give you an idea whether you would prefer a name that is popular and is widely used or use a unique name which does not appear in the top 20 names for children over the past decade.

Things to take care of when decorating your Child’s room

May 10th, 2010

For most parents, decorating their child’s room is an extremely exciting task. In fact most parents I meet are often more excited than the kids themselves when it comes to designing or decorating the child’s room. Of course whether you are decorating a room for a new born or for a toddler, there are a number of things you should take care of to ensure your child makes the best of their new room.

For me, the first thing I look at is the colors. Did you know that different colors can affect the mood of your child in a variety of ways? In fact colors can make a difference to your child’s concentration, energy, focus etc. For example, colors such as red or yellow create energy. Yellow is often used in many kids’ rooms as it is associated with the brightness of the sun. Also it helps light up a room even if there is no direct sunlight entering the space. While brighter colors create energy, colors such as shades of blue are associated with relaxation and soothing your brain. Blue can be a great color to get a child to calm down whereas shades of green can be used to help a child focus. The color that you want to use is up to you but doing a little research on the effects of each color on a human being can be great for your child’s future.

Another thing to keep in mind is that a child will always be quite possessive about their own rooms. It is a space which they can call their own. Many kids use their rooms are their own sanctuary. That’s why if you notice, many kids who are older, try writing their names on the walls or at the entrance of the room. Psychologically, they are trying to convey that you are entering a space belonging to them. That’s why when I decorate a room, I find out the best ways to write the name of the child at a place where it can be read easily. May be on the wall above the bed or outside on the door to enter the room.

To spell the child’s name, I love the eco-friendly wooden letters you get nowadays which come in all kinds of designs such as wooden letters with dolphins or fairies on them. There are plenty of varieties from which you can choose from and these letters stick easily to any surface. Most important of all is that they are eco-friendly and free of harmful toxics.

In fact that is the other factor I look at while decorating a child’s room. All materials used whether colors, furniture, decorative items etc must be all eco-friendly. This is not just good for the environment but it is one of the most important things you can do for your child’s future health. Problem with non eco-friendly products are that it slowly enters the system and hence you do not see immediate effects on your child. But you can be sure that they are causing harm and kids who are exposed to non-environmentally friendly products have shown various health problems as they grow up.

These are little things that you can take care of while creating a special space for your child but they go a long way in helping a kid be happy and enthusiastic all of the time.
